Camino Finisterre – Santiago to Finisterre/Muxía

2023 Prices: Self-guided tours

Number of days

5-6 days walking, usually booked as a 7-night package.

Description

This is a Camino with a difference because all roads lead from, instead of to, Santiago! It is a walk with a different feel – you are now heading to the sea and to the “end of the world”. Having reached the lighthouse in Finisterre, you are experiencing a different ending, a different sense of achievement. Continue on to Muxía to see the Costa da Morte (the Coast of Death) at its most beautiful.

The level of difficulty is moderate – the rolling hills in this part of Galicia are similar in many respects to the Irish countryside.

Options – Combine the last 2 stages (Finisterre – Lires – Muxía) into 1 longer day, thus freeing up a free day. Take a rest day in Finisterre, have a free day in Santiago or even explore the possibility of some time in beautiful A Coruña.

La Coruña – Create the perfect week by adding in a day and night in the beautiful city that’s home to the Torre de Hercules and Riazor beach. Ask us for details!

Remember that every trip is unique and we can tailor yours to suit you.

Day 1 – Fly from Dublin to Santiago

Stay in Santiago for your first night and enjoy exploring the historic centre of the city, all centred around the cathedral in the Plaza Obradoiro.

Day 2 – Walk 21km to Negreira

While the first part of the day sees you quickly escape the clutches of urban Santiago, you soon feel the freedom of a quieter countryside than that experienced from Sarria to Santiago. The Roman bridge and horseshoe waterfall at Ponte Maceira is a highlight of this, and indeed any, Camino stage.

Day 3 – Walk 21km to Santa Mariña or 33km to Olveiroa

From Negreira, you will ascend gradually for a full 11km or so until just before Vilaserio, while the second half of the day levels out.

For those  who want a shorter day, you are collected in Santa Mariña for transfer to Olveiroa, those who want to walk every step can do so!

Day 4 – Walk 20km to Cée

This is a wonderfully peaceful day: after passing Hospital, you walk through along quiet trails through pine woodlands beef catching your first sight of the Atlantic  when approaching Cée.

Day 5 – Walk 13km to Finisterre

Your entire day is spent getting views of journey’s end, the headland of Finisterre. The beaches at Estorde and Sardiñeiro whet your appetite for the beautiful beach of Langosteira which brings you all the way to the fishing town of Finisterre. A 6km round trip to the lighthouse allows you to watch the sun go down over the end of the world.

Day 6 – Walk 13km to Lires

Lires is a picturesque Galician village where you can admire the pretty stone cottages and walls in the knowledge that you are nearly at your walk’s end.

Day 7 – Walk 15km to Muxía

Muxía is a quiet Camino jewel – many finish walking in Finisterre and don’t know what they are missing! Explore the wild Atlantic crashing against the shore and admire  the Señora de la Barca church standing proud against the Atlantic.  Remember that the beautiful Costa da Morte gets its name for good reason - don’t stray too close to the water!

Day 8 – Fly back

Private transfer from Muxía to Santiago airport for your return flight to Dublin.

Option: Combine days 6 and 7 into one longer day, allowing for a free day in Santiago at the end.

Option: Factor in 24 hours in A Coruña and visit the historic Torre de Hercules and much more!
